Lee Elia Autographs
Lee Elia is a former American baseball player and manager, born on July 16, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Elia was introduced in the baseball world in 1966, where he made his debut with the Chicago White Sox. During his playing years, he played for several major league teams including the Phillies, Brewers, and Cubs. Elia's baseball career was not as impressive as his managerial career, as he primarily served as a backup utility player in most of the teams he played.
After retiring from playing baseball in 1974, Lee Elia began a new journey as a baseball manager. He was named the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies in the year 1987. Elia managed the team for two years, and under his leadership, the Phillies reached their high point in 1988 with a 65-96 record. Later, he joined the Chicago Cubs as a manager in 1982, and helped lead the team to a division title in 1984, where the Cubs made it to the National League Championship Series. In his nine year managerial career, Lee won an impressive 363 games.
Off the field, Lee Elia was known for his fiery temper, which was evident during one of his most talked-about outbursts in 1983. Elia's Cubs had recently begun the season with a 5-14 record, and he had grown increasingly frustrated with Chicago's passionate supporters. During a press conference, Elia unleashed a profanity-laden tirade that immediately went viral but later regretted. While his temper may have overshadowed his coaching accomplishments, Lee Elia continues to be remembered for his contributions to the game of baseball.
