Lefty Driesell Autographs
Charles Grice Driesell was born on December 25, 1931, in Norfolk, Virginia. He is better known by his nickname, Lefty. Driesell was a multi-sport athlete in high school and excelled in basketball and baseball. He played for Granby High School and was named Norfolk Athlete of the Year in 1950. After high school, Driesell attended VMI, where he played baseball and basketball. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1954, and he spent three seasons in their minor league system before retiring from professional baseball in 1956.
Driesell's baseball career was brief, but he was remembered for his outstanding outfielding abilities. He was a fleet-footed outfielder who possessed a strong throwing arm. His speed on the base paths made him a threat to steal at any moment. In his three seasons, Driesell played for three different teams and had a career batting average of .239. At the time of his retirement, Driesell had compiled 133 hits, scored 100 runs, and stolen 32 bases. Although his baseball career was short-lived, Driesell's experience in professional sports helped shape his coaching philosophy when he later became a college basketball coach.
After retiring from baseball, Driesell attended Duke University, where he earned his master's degree. He began his coaching career in 1959 as an assistant basketball coach at Davidson College. He then became the head coach at the University of Maryland in 1969. Driesell is best known for his tenure at Maryland, where he led the Terrapins to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and a Final Four appearance in 1974. He also coached at James Madison University, Georgia State University, and The Citadel. Driesell retired from coaching in 2003 with a career record of 786-394. Lefty Driesell was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
