O'Doul's best years came when he joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1929, where he became one of the best hitters in baseball. He led the National League in hitting with a .398 batting average, and he also hit 32 home runs and drove in 122 runs, in what was a remarkable performance for the time. He was also known for his versatility as he played multiple positions including first base, second base, outfield and even pitched in a few games.

After his playing days were over, O'Doul moved into coaching, becoming one of the most successful managers in San Francisco's Pacific Coast League. O’Doul managed the San Francisco Seals for several seasons and in 1948, he guided the team to a Championship victory. He continued to serve as a successful ambassador for baseball, especially in the Pacific Rim, organizing goodwill tours and helping to popularize the sport in Japan. O'Doul's place in the Baseball Hall of Fame was cemented in 2002 when he was posthumously inducted after years of campaigning. Read even more about Lefty O'Doul at Wikipedia
