Leon Day Autographs
Leon Day was a baseball player born on October 30, 1916, in Alexandria, Virginia. Day is considered one of the most prominent players of the Negro League, showcasing outstanding pitching abilities. He started his professional baseball career in 1934 at the age of 17 with the Baltimore Black Sox. His speed and control on the mound were undeniable, leading him to become a starting pitcher during his second season at the Black Sox. Day eventually continued to play for several other teams, including the Newark Eagles, Baltimore Elite Giants, and the minor leagues, where he played for the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants.
Day achieved his most remarkable baseball accomplishment in 1946 when he pitched an outstanding 12 shutouts in a season. He was also heavily involved in helping his team win the Negro League World Series in 1946, where he pitched the penultimate game that brought the Eagles championship glory in the seventh game. Day earned his nickname "The Pride of Alexandria" from his family and fans alike, reflecting the pride and love that people had for him. Despite his successful career, Day never had a chance to play in the Major League Baseball, as he retired after the end of Negro League in 1948.
In 1995, Day was finally recognized for his accomplishments when he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Day became the seventh Negro League veteran inducted in the hall, which was relatively late compared to the first Negro League player inducted in 1971. Leon Day deserved to be inducted in the hall, and his legacy lives on through his fans, family, and the many people he has inspired. Although he never had a chance to play in the Major League Baseball, his contribution to baseball stands the same, and his journey continues to inspire the people of today.
