Lew Burdette Autographs
Lew Burdette was born on November 22, 1926, in Nitro, West Virginia, and became one of the most dominant pitchers during his era. Burdette began his professional baseball career in 1947, playing for the Class B team of the National League-affiliated Boston Braves. After a brief stint in the military, he returned to baseball and joined the Braves in 1950. He spent over a decade with the team, accumulating a career record of 203 wins, 144 losses, and 1206 strikeouts.
Burdette was best known for his performance in the 1957 World Series, where he led the Milwaukee Braves to victory against the heavily favored New York Yankees. He pitched three complete games, including a shutout in the decisive Game 7, earning him the accolades of World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Sports Illustrated's "Sportsman of the Year" award. Burdette continued to excel on the field, receiving three All-Star selections and leading the league in wins and innings pitched in 1959.
In 1961, Burdette was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, playing for them until he retired in 1967. He ended his career with a record of 203-144, an ERA of 3.66, and 1,283 career strikeouts. After retiring from baseball, Burdette remained active in the sport as a coach, manager, and executive. He passed away on February 6, 2007, at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history.
