Hernandez began playing baseball in his hometown of Villa Clara, Cuba, where he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent on the mound. In 1995, at the age of 20, Hernandez defected from Cuba and began playing professional baseball in the United States. Hernandez's major league debut came in 1996 with the Florida Marlins. During his rookie season, he gained national attention by leading the Marlins to their first World Series victory. Hernandez was named the Most Valuable Player of the series after pitching a complete game shutout in the decisive game seven against the Cleveland Indians. Hernandez went on to play for several teams during his 17-year career, including the San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Washington Nationals. Throughout his career, Hernandez was known for his durability and consistency on the mound, and was particularly effective in crucial postseason games.

Over the course of his career, Hernandez received numerous awards and accolades, including two All-Star selections and a Silver Slugger Award in 2004.
