Smith made his major league debut with the Phillies in 1978 and quickly made a name for himself as a speedy and skilled outfielder. He helped the team win the National League East division in 1980 and was a key player in their World Series victory that year. In 1982, he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals and continued to excel, leading the league in stolen bases that year.

Over the course of his career, Smith also played for the Kansas City Royals, the Atlanta Braves, and the Baltimore Orioles. He was known for his speed on the basepaths and his ability to hit for power and average. He retired in 1994 with a career batting average of .288, 94 home runs, and 580 stolen bases. Despite his impressive statistics, Smith was often overshadowed by other high-profile players of his era, but he remains a beloved figure in baseball history.
