Lou Whitaker is a former American Major League Baseball second baseman who was born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 12th, 1957. Whitaker was one of the key players on the Detroit Tigers team that won the World Series in 1984. He was nicknamed "Sweet Lou" by his teammates due to his sweet swing and his excellent defense in the field. Whitaker was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fifth round of the 1975 MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut for the Tigers in September 1977, and was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 1978. Whitaker was known for being a very consistent hitter throughout his career, and he was also recognized for his excellent fielding as he won three Gold Glove awards.
