He made his MLB debut for the Tigers in September 1977, and was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 1978. Whitaker was known for being a very consistent hitter throughout his career, and he was also recognized for his excellent fielding as he won three Gold Glove awards. He played his entire 19-year career with the Detroit Tigers, and he recorded 2,369 hits, 244 home runs, and 1,084 RBIs.

After retiring from baseball in 1995, Whitaker was eligible for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame but never received enough votes. Nevertheless, Whitaker was considered to be one of the best second basemen of his time, and his contributions to the Tigers helped the team win the World Series in 1984.
