Luis Alicea is an accomplished Puerto Rican former baseball player and coach. Born on July 29, 1965, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, he made his debut in the major leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals on June 9, 1988. As a switch-hitting second baseman, Alicea quickly established himself as a valuable utility player, displaying exceptional speed and defensive skills. He spent his first eight seasons in the majors with the Cardinals, then played for the Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, and Anaheim Angels. Over his 13-year career, Alicea batted .260 with 47 home runs, 422 runs batted in, and 132 stolen bases.
Following his retirement in 2002, Alicea embarked on a coaching career that spanned two decades. Beginning as a special assistant in the Arizona Diamondbacks' organization, he later served as a first base coach for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2006 to 2011, winning a World Series title in 2011. After that, he moved on to coach for the Boston Red Sox and then the Houston Astros. Alicea's coaching has focused intensely on hitting and base running, two areas where he excelled as a player. He is credited with helping develop several successful major league hitters, including David Ortiz, the Red Sox all-time home run leader.
In addition to his work on the field, Alicea is actively involved in youth and community programs, primarily through his charitable organization, "Baserunning for Life." His foundation's goal is to inspire children to achieve their dreams and aspirations, both in sports and in life. Alicea is known for his humility, commitment, and dedication to improving the lives of those around him. He is respected by his peers and admired by baseball fans worldwide for his contributions to the sport as both a player and a coach.
