Mamie Johnson was born on September 27, 1935, in South Carolina, and she was the eldest of 11 children in her family. She began playing baseball when she was just a young girl, and her passion for the sport only grew as she got older. Despite being discouraged from playing due to her gender, Johnson continued to play on high school teams and eventually joined a semi-professional team named the Alexandria Dukes. In 1953, Johnson received a tryout with the Indianapolis Clowns, a team in the Negro Leagues. She impressed the coaches with her fastball and was eventually signed onto the team. She was the only female player on the team, and her success on the field proved that women could play the sport at a professional level. Johnson played with the Clowns for three seasons and earned a record of 33 wins and 8 losses. She was known for her unflappable confidence, her powerful pitching, and her ability to strike out some of the biggest names in the sport, including Hank Aaron and Willie Mays.
After her baseball career ended, Johnson earned a nursing degree and worked as a nurse for decades. She was a trailblazer for women in baseball and paved the way for future players like Toni Stone and Jackie Mitchell. Johnson was inducted into the Women's Sports Foundation International Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum Hall of Fame in 2008.
