Marge Schott Autographs
Marge Schott was a prominent figure in the world of Major League Baseball (MLB). Born on August 18, 1928, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Schott inherited the ownership of the Cincinnati Reds in 1984, becoming the only woman in charge of a major league franchise. Under her leadership, the team enjoyed significant success, winning the World Series in 1990 and 1995. Schott was praised for the investments she made in the team, including the development of the Riverfront Stadium, which was subsequently named the Cinergy Field.
Despite her success, Schott became controversial for her indiscreet and insensitive comments surrounding social issues. She offended many players, fans, and city officials with her comments about African Americans, Jews, and homosexuals. In 1993, she was banned from participating in the day-to-day operations of the Cincinnati Reds for the entire 1996 season by MLB. Schott was later forced to sell her share of the team in 1999, after further incidents of insensitive comments, as well as allegations of racism and sexism.
Marge Schott became the third woman to own a major league baseball team and was one of the most influential figures of her kind in the sport. Her dedication to the Cincinnati Reds was remarkable, earning the team two World Series victories during her tenure as owner. However, her legacy is marred by her insensitivity around social issues and the resulting backlash that forced her out of the sport. Despite these controversies, her contributions to the sport, and women in leadership roles, cannot be overlooked.
