Mark Belanger Autographs
Mark Belanger was a talented shortstop who spent his entire 18-year career with the Baltimore Orioles. Belanger was born on June 8, 1944, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and he played his high school ball at Pittsfield High School. Despite being a talented athlete, he initially pursued a career in teaching before being signed by the Orioles in 1962.
Belanger made his Major League debut for the Orioles in 1965 and quickly established himself as one of the top defensive players in the game. He won eight Gold Gloves for his outstanding fielding, including six straight from 1973-78. Despite being known primarily for his defensive prowess, Belanger was also a respectable hitter, finishing with a career batting average of .228. In 1983, he was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame.
In addition to his success on the field, Belanger was also known for his leadership and work ethic. He was a mentor to several young players, including Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. and Eddie Murray. Belanger passed away on October 6, 1998, after a battle with lung cancer. He left a lasting legacy as one of the greatest defensive shortstops in baseball history and a beloved member of the Orioles organization.
