Mark Fidrych Autographs

Mark FidrychMark Fidrych is an American former Major League Baseball pitcher who was born on Aug. 14, 1954, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Nicknamed "The Bird" for his hunched-over pitching style that resembled a bird bobbing up and down on a branch, Fidrych captured the imagination of America with his boyish enthusiasm, unconventional antics on the mound, and dominant rookie season in 1976.
Fidrych made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers on April 20, 1976, and quickly became a sensation for his eccentric behavior, such as talking to the ball, smoothing out the dirt on the mound with his hands between pitches, and giving the ball to the umpire after a strikeout. He also became a force on the mound, going 19-9 in 29 starts as a rookie, and winning the American League Rookie of the Year award. His success on the field and lively personality made him one of the most popular players in the league, and he was named an All-Star that year.
However, Fidrych's promising career was derailed by injuries in subsequent years, limiting him to just 27 more starts over the next four seasons. He retired from baseball in 1983 at the age of 29 with a career record of 29-19 and a 3.10 ERA. Despite his short career, Fidrych remains a beloved figure in baseball history, and was inducted into the Tigers Hall of Fame in 2000. His impact on the game continues to be felt, as he helped usher in a new era of baseball personalities and brought joy to millions of fans with his infectious enthusiasm and love for the game.
