Mark Gardner is a former Major League Baseball player who was born on March 1, 1962, in Los Angeles, California. Gardner's baseball career began in 1985 when he was drafted in the third round by the Montreal Expos. He spent seven seasons with the Expos, primarily as a starting pitcher, before moving on to play for the Kansas City Royals, Florida Marlins, and San Francisco Giants.
Gardner's best years in the major leagues came during his tenure with the Giants from 1996-2001. He became a valuable member of the team's pitching staff, helping the Giants reach the playoffs in 1997 and 2000. Gardner's most notable achievement was pitching a no-hitter against the Dodgers in 1991 as a member of the Expos. He retired from baseball in 2001 with a career record of 99-93, a 4.56 ERA, and 1,085 strikeouts.
After his playing days were over, Gardner remained involved in baseball as a coach. He served as the bullpen coach for the San Francisco Giants from 2003-2006, and as the team's pitching coach from 2007-2012. Gardner's contributions to the Giants organization were recognized in 2012 when he was awarded the Willie Mac Award, which is given annually to the team's most inspirational player.
