Marty Bystrom was a professional baseball player who was born on July 26, 1958, in Coral Gables, Florida. He attended high school in Coral Gables and was a standout athlete in both baseball and football. After his rookie season, Bystrom struggled with injuries and inconsistency. He played for the Phillies and the Seattle Mariners over the next six seasons, but he never regained the form that he showed in his rookie year. He retired from baseball in 1988 with a career record of 31-33 and a 4.23 ERA in 113 games. Despite his short career, Bystrom will always be remembered as the rookie phenom who helped lead the Phillies to their first World Series appearance in 30 years.
