Born on November 1, 1988, in Itami, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, Tanaka started playing baseball at a young age and eventually reached the professional level by joining the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in 2007.
Tanaka made a name for himself in Japan, earning the title of the "ace" and leading the Golden Eagles to their first Japan Series championship in 2013. He also earned multiple accolades and awards, including the Eiji Sawamura Award (Japan's equivalent of the Cy Young Award) in 2011, 2013, and 2014.
