Born on November 1, 1988, in Itami, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, Tanaka started playing baseball at a young age and eventually reached the professional level by joining the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in 2007.
Tanaka made a name for himself in Japan, earning the title of the "ace" and leading the Golden Eagles to their first Japan Series championship in 2013.
