In 1998, the Seattle Mariners drafted Thornton in the first round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. He made his Major League debut with the Mariners in 2004 and became a regular member of their bullpen by the following season. Thornton joined the Chicago White Sox in 2006, where he spent the bulk of his career. He was a left-handed relief pitcher, recording 28 career saves and earning an All-Star appearance in 2010. Thornton played for six teams throughout his career and retired from baseball in 2017.

Throughout his career, Thornton was known for his left-handed fastball and an effective slider. Despite being primarily a middle reliever, he had a long and successful career in the MLB. Thornton helped the White Sox win the American League Central in 2008 and was a key component of the Boston Red Sox 2013 World Series championship team. His remarkable career in the baseball industry has made him one of the most respected and celebrated baseball players of his generation.
