Mel Clark Autographs
Mel Clark was a professional baseball pitcher who played in the majors from 1947 to 1953. He began his baseball career at the age of 19 when he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals' farm team. In 1947, he made his debut with the team against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and that same year, he became the first pitcher to record a save in a World Series game. Clark went on to have a successful career, playing for the Cardinals, the Chicago Cubs and the Philadelphia Phillies.
Clark's best season came in 1951 when he was with the Cubs. He pitched in 38 games with 16 saves and a 2.75 ERA. It was said that he had a devastating curveball and a fastball that often kept batters off balance. However, in 1953, Clark's career was cut short due to an arm injury. He retired and went on to work as an insurance salesman.
Despite his relatively short career, Clark was a beloved figure in the baseball world. He went on to work as a scout for various teams and was known for his friendly demeanor and willingness to share his knowledge and experiences with younger players. He was also recognized for his contributions to the sport when he was inducted into the Iowa Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971. Clark passed away in 2002 at the age of 74.
