Melvin Edward Parnell was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 13, 1922. Parnell's baseball career began after he was signed by the Boston Red Sox at the age of 18. He made his Major League debut in 1947 and quickly established himself as one of the team's most reliable pitchers. Parnell was a left-handed pitcher who possessed a fastball that reached up to 93 miles per hour, a devastating curveball, and a changeup that kept batters off balance. More about Mel Parnell

Parnell's best season came in 1949 when he led the American League in wins with 25 and earned a spot on the All-Star team. He was also awarded the Pitcher of the Year Award by the Sporting News that year. Parnell would go on to pitch for the Red Sox for 10 seasons, compiling a career record of 123 wins and 75 losses.
