Melvin Douglas Queen was a former professional baseball player and coach who was born on January 26, 1942, in Johnson County, Kentucky. He grew up in the small Appalachian town of Paintsville, where he began playing baseball at a young age. Queen's professional baseball career began in 1966 when he signed with the Cincinnati Reds organization. He was a right-handed pitcher who spent four seasons in the minor leagues, earning a promotion to the major leagues in 1969. Over his four-year career in the majors, Queen pitched for the Reds, San Diego Padres, and Montreal Expos. He retired as a player in 1973, just one year after being traded to the Expos, and transitioned into coaching.

Following his playing career, Queen became a coach for the Montreal Expos organization. He spent several years in various coaching positions for the Expos before being named the team's pitching coach in 1981. Queen was known for his expertise in developing young pitchers, and he spent several seasons working with promising pitchers like Bill Gullickson and Charlie Lea. He also spent time coaching for the Boston Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays before retiring from coaching in 2003. Mel Queen passed away on August 3, 2011.
