Mel Rojas Autographs
Mel Rojas Sr. is a former professional baseball player who played in Major League Baseball for 11 seasons. Born on December 10, 1966, in Montecristi, Dominican Republic, Rojas started playing baseball at a young age. In 1985, Rojas was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent. He spent several years in the minor leagues and made his MLB debut on April 4, 1990, for the Pirates. Rojas played with the Pirates until 1996 and then joined the Chicago Cubs for one season. He later played for the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Montreal Expos.
Rojas was primarily a relief pitcher during his career and was used as a closer in many games. He had a strong fastball, and his pitches were known for their movement, making it challenging for batters to hit them. In 1993, Rojas had his best season, where he had 36 saves, 62 strikeouts, and an ERA of 2.83 for the Pirates. He finished 4th in the National League Cy Young Award voting that year. Rojas retired from baseball after the 2004 season, finishing his career with a record of 34-31, 84 saves, and an ERA of 3.65.
After retiring from baseball, Rojas returned to the Dominican Republic, where he worked as a pitching coach for several years. He also continued to be involved in baseball, coaching and playing in various leagues around the country. Rojas’ son, also named Mel Rojas, followed in his footsteps and is a professional baseball player currently playing for the Hanshin Tigers in Japan. Mel Rojas Sr. remains a well-respected figure in the baseball community and is appreciated for his contributions to the game both as a player and a coach.
