Mike Heath was born on February 5, 1955, in Tampa, Florida. He attended Hillsborough High School in Tampa where he excelled as a catcher on the baseball team. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the second round of the 1973 MLB draft at the age of eighteen. Heath made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers on September 4, 1978, against the Texas Rangers where he went 2-for-3 with an RBI. More about Mike Heath

Heath played for the Detroit Tigers from 1978 until 1985, and he also played for the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Yankees. He was a solid catcher with a good arm and he also had some power at the plate, hitting 20 or more home runs twice in his career. Heath is best remembered for his time with the Detroit Tigers where he helped the team win the World Series in 1984. He caught the final pitch of the World Series, and he was also the batter who made the final out in the American League Championship Series that year.

After his playing career, Heath moved into coaching and minor league managing. He was a minor league manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2005 to 2010. He also coached at the major league level for the Pirates and the Toledo Mud Hens. In 2017, Mike Heath was inducted into the Tampa Baseball Museum at the Al Lopez House where his accomplishments on the baseball field were recognized.
