Hegan was known for his defensive skills in the field as well as his hitting abilities. He was primarily a first baseman and outfielder, and he played at these positions for most of his career. Throughout his career, Hegan hit 127 home runs, batted a .242 average, and drove in 578 runs. His most significant contribution, however, was his fielding, where he committed only 62 errors in over 12,000 innings throughout his career.

After retiring from professional baseball in 1977, Hegan joined the broadcast team for the Milwaukee Brewers. He worked with the Brewers' television and radio broadcasts and quickly became a fan favorite for his charismatic personality and lively commentary. In 1996, Hegan was awarded the Ford C. Frick Award, which is given by the Baseball Hall of Fame for broadcasting excellence. He continued his association with the Brewers until his retirement in 2011.
