During his career, Hershberger was known for his excellent fielding and consistent hitting. In 1963, Hershberger set a record of 225 putouts in left field, a feat that was the fourth-highest in American League history. In 1967, he helped lead the White Sox to the American League pennant, where they faced the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, where Hershberger batted .333, but unfortunately lost in seven games.

After retiring from professional baseball, Hershberger went on to coach college baseball. He first served as an assistant coach at Michigan State University and later became the head coach for Central Michigan University in 1978. Hershberger eventually retired from coaching in 1999 after a successful career.
