Mike Ryan was born on November 25th, 1941, in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and is a former catcher in Major League Baseball. He played baseball in high school and was scouted by the Boston Red Sox, who signed him as an amateur free agent in 1961. Ryan made his Major League debut on September 13th, 1964, with the Boston Red Sox, where he played three seasons. In 1967, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he played for four seasons, before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he finished his career as a player in 1974. Ryan's baseball career was defined by his skills as a catcher, and he was known for his exceptional defensive abilities. Throughout his career, he was highly regarded for his ability to throw out runners who attempted to steal bases. In 1968, he set a National League record for the most consecutive errorless games by a catcher with 223 games. Ryan was also known for his ability to handle pitchers, and many players spoke highly of his game-calling skills. Ryan played in two World Series, in 1967 and 1971, and was a member of the World Series-winning Pittsburgh Pirates team in 1971.

After retiring as a player, Ryan stayed active in baseball and worked as a coach and scout for several teams. He served as a catching instructor for the Pirates and was later hired as a scout by the Houston Astros. In 1994, he was promoted to director of scouting for the Astros and held that position until 2008. Ryan's contribution to baseball has been recognized, and he was inducted into the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001.
