Mike Scott was born on April 26, 1955, in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in Southern California. He played college baseball at Pepperdine University before signing with the New York Mets in 1976. However, it wasn't until he moved to the Houston Astros in 1983 that Scott's career truly took off. Scott had a fantastic year in 1986, going 18-10 with a 2.22 ERA, striking out 306 batters and leading the National League in both shutouts and complete games. However, he is probably best remembered for his incredible postseason performance that year, particularly in the NLCS against the New York Mets. In the first two games of the series, Scott struck out 19 batters, including setting a record for most strikeouts in a postseason game with 14.
