Shannon is one of a handful of players who have spent their entire careers with the Cardinals. As a player, Shannon was known for his powerful arm, good defensive skills and his clutch hitting. Shannon was a member of three National League pennant-winning teams and two World Series winning teams in 1964 and 1967. In the 1964 World Series, Shannon recorded 8 hits in 29 at-bats, including two home runs, and drove in 4 runs to help the Cardinals win their first championship in 18 years. In the 1967 World Series, he hit .304 with 8 hits, including 2 home runs, and 9 RBIs, which helped the Cardinals win their second World Series title in three years.

After retiring from playing baseball, Shannon continued as a broadcaster for the Cardinals, becoming one of the most popular and beloved of all the media personalities in St. Louis. Shannon has been a fixture in the Cardinals broadcast booth since 1972 and has been part of every Cardinals' World Series championship since 1964 in some capacity. During his broadcasting career, Shannon has been honored with numerous awards, including the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and the Baseball Hall of Fame Ford C.
