After graduating from Hickman County High School, Smithson attended Cumberland University, where he played collegiate baseball. Smithson made his major league debut with the Rangers in 1982, but it was with the Minnesota Twins that he found success. In 1984, he went 15-10 with a 3.68 ERA, helping the Twins win the American League West division. He also pitched a complete game shutout in game two of the ALCS against the Detroit Tigers. Smithson was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1986 and spent the remainder of his career bouncing around teams such as the Montreal Expos, Seattle Mariners, and Kansas City Royals.
