Raised in one of the poorest areas of Washington, Thompson was determined to change his life through sports. Thompson was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1979 and made his Major League debut in 1984. He was known for his speed and agility on the field, which made him a valuable asset to any team he played for. Throughout his career, Thompson played for several teams including the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros, and St. Louis Cardinals.
