Monte Irvin was an American baseball player who played in the Negro leagues and Major League Baseball. He was born on February 25, 1919, in Haleyville, Alabama, but grew up in Orange, New Jersey. Irvin played both baseball and football in high school and later went on to become an All-American football player at Lincoln University. Irvin's baseball career took off in 1938 when he joined the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League. He quickly became a star player, leading his team to multiple championships and earning recognition as one of the best players in the league. In 1942, Irvin was drafted into the military, where he served for three years in World War II.
