Omar Quintanilla is a former professional baseball player who was born on October 24, 1981, in El Paso, Texas. Quintanilla started his baseball career while attending Socorro High School, where he was voted the district's most valuable player three times. After graduation, he attended the University of Texas, where he played for the university's baseball team, the Texas Longhorns. He was eventually drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the first round of the 2003 Major League Baseball draft.
Quintanilla played in the majors for over a decade, spending time on numerous teams, including the Colorado Rockies, Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, and Texas Rangers. He found success as a defensive infielder, often playing at second base and shortstop. Quintanilla was known for his impressive glovework and his ability to make flashy, acrobatic plays. Despite his limited offensive output, his contributions on the defensive end of the field made him a valuable player to have on a team.
After his baseball career, Quintanilla returned to his alma mater, the University of Texas, as a coach for the baseball team. He remained with the team until 2019, working as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Today, Quintanilla remains a beloved figure in Texas baseball, having left his mark on both the college and professional levels of the sport.
