Orestes Destrade Autographs
Orestes Destrade was a professional baseball player born on May 8, 1962, in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He went on to play Major League Baseball (MLB) as a first baseman and third baseman for the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Florida Marlins, and the Hanshin Tigers in Japan throughout his career. Destrade was known for his powerful swing, which helped him to become a two-time All-Star player.
Destrade made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees in 1987. During his sophomore year, he hit 18 home runs, and helped the team to advance to the American League Championship Series (ALCS), before ultimately losing to the Oakland Athletics. He played with the Pittsburgh Pirates for three seasons before being traded off to the Marlins, where he played his best-ever season. Destrade batted .274 with a career-high 20 home runs and 87 runs batted in (RBIs) in 1993, earning a spot on the National League All-Star team.
After his MLB career ended, Destrade moved on to play in the Japanese Baseball League, where he played for the Hanshin Tigers from 1995 to 1997. In his first season in Japan, he hit 34 home runs and was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP), becoming the first foreign player to win the title. Destrade retired in December 1998, with a batting average of .261, 62 home runs, and 238 RBIs in his career. Following his retirement from playing, he became a baseball commentator and a radio host, and was inducted into the Puerto Rico Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009.
