Oscar Gamble was born on December 20, 1949, in Ramer, Alabama. He was a professional baseball player who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 17 seasons from 1969 to 1985. Gamble was a left-handed batter who played primarily as an outfielder and designated hitter. He was known for his distinctive afro hairstyle, which was a trademark of his playing days. Gamble started his professional baseball career in 1968 with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues. He was signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1969 and made his MLB debut on August 27, 1969, as a pinch hitter. He played for the Cubs for two seasons before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1972. He spent three seasons with the Phillies before being traded again, this time to the Cleveland Indians in 1975. Gamble played for the Indians for three seasons before returning to the Yankees as a free agent in 1979. He had his best offensive season in 1979, hitting .345 with 19 home runs and 80 RBIs.
