Gamble started his professional baseball career in 1968 with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues. He was signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1969 and made his MLB debut on August 27, 1969, as a pinch hitter. He played for the Cubs for two seasons before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1972. He spent three seasons with the Phillies before being traded again, this time to the Cleveland Indians in 1975. Gamble played for the Indians for three seasons before returning to the Yankees as a free agent in 1979. He had his best offensive season in 1979, hitting .345 with 19 home runs and 80 RBIs. He played for the Yankees until 1984 before ending his career with the San Diego Padres in 1985.

Gamble finished his career with a .265 batting average, 200 home runs, and 666 RBIs in 1,584 games played. He was known for his power hitting and his ability to hit left-handed pitching. He hit 31 home runs in 1977, which was a career-high, and hit at least 15 home runs in nine seasons. Gamble was also known for his sense of humor and his love of the game. After his playing career, he worked as a hitting coach with various teams, including the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets. He passed away on January 31, 2018, at the age of 68.
