He was born on February 10, 1952, in Boston, Massachusetts, and attended Harvard University, where he played baseball and football. After college, Carey was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the second round of the 1973 Major League Baseball draft. He made his debut for the Rangers in 1978 and spent two seasons with the team before being traded to the Detroit Tigers. Carey played for the Tigers from 1980 to 1984 and was a key member of the team that won the 1984 World Series. He batted .385 in the series, including a clutch two-run home run in Game 5 that helped seal the victory for the Tigers.

Over the course of his seven-year career in the major leagues, Paul Carey played in 417 games and hit .257 with 19 home runs and 106 RBIs. He was known for his solid defensive play in the outfield and was a reliable pinch hitter off the bench. After retiring from baseball, Carey went on to work in the financial industry, but he remained active in the sport as a coach and mentor to young players. His contributions to the game of baseball will not soon be forgotten.
