He began his baseball career in 1987 when he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the amateur draft. Harnisch played for the Orioles from 1988 to 1995, where he recorded a 68-63 win-loss record with an ERA of 3.89. He was then traded to the Houston Astros in 1996 and played for them until 1998.
