Pete Runnels Autographs
Pete Runnels was an American baseball player, born on January 28th, 1928, in Lufkin, Texas. He was an outstanding hitter who started his career in 1947 with the Texarkana Liners. A versatile infielder, Runnels could play third base, second base, and shortstop, but his most significant contribution was at first base. In 1948, he was signed by the Washington Senators, and during his four-year tenure, he proved himself as one of the top hitters in the American League.
In 1951, Pete Runnels experienced his best season as a major league player hitting .320, with a .381 on-base percentage and led the league with 41 doubles. He was named to the All-Star team for the first time in his career and finished third in the MVP race. After five seasons with the Senators, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1958. In his first year with his new club, Runnels won the American League batting title by hitting .322. He went on to win the batting title again in 1960 and finished second in 1959 and 1962.
Pete Runnels retired from professional baseball in 1964 with a career batting average of .291. He played in 1,647 games, had 1,822 hits, 530 runs batted in, 772 runs scored, and 246 doubles. In addition to his two batting crowns, he was named an All-Star five times and won two Gold Gloves. Runnels also played a crucial role in Red Sox history, helping the team win the American League pennant in 1967, their first in more than twenty years. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
