Pete Smith was born on February 27, 1966, in Pasadena, California, and was raised in Mount Hamilton, California. Smith attended Westmont High School in Campbell, California, where he excelled in both baseball and football. In his senior year, he was named as the Northern California Player of the Year in football and was also selected in the 1984 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft by the Atlanta Braves in the first round.
Smith made his pitching debut in the MLB on April 14, 1987, with the Braves, and quickly established himself as a valuable player for the team. Known for his consistent performance, Smith played for the Braves for five seasons before moving on to the New York Mets in 1993. In his career, he played for various teams, including the Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, and Baltimore Orioles. Overall, Smith played 11 seasons in the MLB, posting an impressive 108-94 record with an ERA of 3.68 over 1705 innings pitched.
Smith retired from baseball after the 1998 season due to injuries, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in his career. In addition to his stellar pitching, Smith was also known for his leadership skills and was widely respected in the league. His consistent performance, coupled with his willingness to take on challenging roles, made him a valuable asset to any team he played for.
