Phil Niekro Autographs
Phil Niekro, born on April 1, 1939, was an American professional baseball pitcher who played in the Major Leagues for 24 seasons. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest knuckleball pitchers in the history of the sport. Niekro began his career with the Milwaukee Braves in 1964, and spent the majority of his career with the Atlanta Braves. He was also briefly a member of the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, and Toronto Blue Jays.
Niekro's mastery of the knuckleball, a pitch that relies on an unpredictable motion caused by its lack of spin, led to him winning 318 games in his career, placing him at the time of his retirement in 1987, eighth on the all-time list. He was also a five-time All-Star and twice a 20-game winner. In 1979, he led the National League in wins, innings pitched, and complete games en route to winning the Cy Young Award. Niekro finished his career with a 3.35 earned run average, 3,342 strikeouts, and 45 shutouts, all impressive accomplishments considering how often the knuckleball can lead to inaccuracy and inconsistency.
Niekro's success can be attributed to his work ethic, which was often described as tireless. He would spend hours each day throwing the knuckleball, finely tuning its path and trajectory. He was also known for his durability, as he maintained his form even as he aged. Above all, Niekro's career stands as a testament to his skill as a pitcher and his dedication to the game of baseball. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.
