Roof was primarily a catcher and known for his defensive skills. He played in 1,012 Major League games, with a career batting average of .215, hitting 46 home runs and driving in 196 runs. His best offensive season came in 1967 when he hit .262 with nine home runs and 47 RBIs. However, it was his defensive skills and the ability to handle a pitching staff, specifically with Jim Kaat, that made him an asset to the Twins.

After retiring as a player, Roof went on to a successful coaching career, working as a coach for several teams, including the Twins, Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers, and Tampa Bay Rays. His expertise in catching and pitching helped develop several young players who went on to have successful careers in the major leagues. In 1987, he won the World Series as a coach for the Twins. Roof passed away on June 17, 2020, at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy as one of the best defensive catchers of his era. Read even more about Phil Roof at Wikipedia
