In 1955, Green was signed by the Boston Red Sox and played for their Minor League affiliates. He impressed the Red Sox management and became the first African-American player to play for the team in the spring training of 1959. He played his first MLB game for the team on July 21, 1959, as a pinch-runner, and subsequently played in just 45 games for the team before he was traded to the New York Mets in 1963. In his short time with the Red Sox, he had a .230 batting average, 13 runs batted, and 13 runs scored.

Throughout his baseball career, Green played as an infielder, primarily in the second base and the shortstop positions. Although he did not have a long career, Pumpsie Green's impact on baseball is significant, given that he was one of the key figures in breaking the color barrier in the sport. His legacy continues to inspire young baseball players, instilling in them the importance of perseverance and breaking down barriers, regardless of race or color.
