Elijah Jerry "Pumpsie" Green was an American baseball player born on October 27, 1933, in Richmond, California. He is widely known for his career as a Major League Baseball infielder and for being the first African-American player to join the Boston Red Sox in 1959. Green started playing baseball at a young age and was an outstanding high school player, which led him to play for the Oakland Oaks at the Pacific Coast League. More about Pumpsie Green

In 1955, Green was signed by the Boston Red Sox and played for their Minor League affiliates. He impressed the Red Sox management and became the first African-American player to play for the team in the spring training of 1959. He played his first MLB game for the team on July 21, 1959, as a pinch-runner, and subsequently played in just 45 games for the team before he was traded to the New York Mets in 1963.
