Terry played for the Yankees from 1956 to 1962 before being traded to the Kansas City Athletics in 1963. He spent three seasons with the Athletics before being traded back to the Yankees in 1965. Terry is best known for his performance in the 1962 World Series against San Francisco Giants, where he pitched three complete games, including a decisive Game 7 victory. His heroics helped the Yankees win their 20th World Series championship. Terry's other career highlights include being selected to the All-Star team twice and leading the American League in shutouts in 1961. He retired in 1967 with a career record of 107 wins and 99 losses.

After retiring from baseball, Terry worked as a pitching coach and managed minor league teams. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Oklahoma Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997. Terry also received recognition for his military service in the United States Army, where he served from 1956 to 1958 during the Korean War.
