Randy Martz is a former professional baseball player who was born on May 28, 1956 in Ottawa, Illinois, USA. He played as a right-handed pitcher in the Major League Baseball (MLB) for eight seasons between 1980 and 1987. Martz started his baseball journey during his college days where he played for the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh as a pitcher, earning All-Conference honors during his time there. After college, Martz spent six years in the minors before he was called up to the MLB. He made his debut on August 29, 1980 for the Chicago Cubs against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Martz spent most of his career with the Cubs, playing for them from 1980 to 1986. In 1982, he had his best season as a professional, with a 6-4 record and a 2.76 ERA. He also recorded 53 strikeouts and six saves in that season. Martz was known for his sharp slider pitch, which helped him rack up a good number of strikeouts despite not possessing an overpowering fastball. He was later traded to the New York Mets in 1987, where he played his final season in MLB before retiring.
After his baseball career, Martz worked as a color analyst for Cubs' radio broadcasts. He also founded his own business, Martz Insurance Agency, in 1993. Randy Martz will always remain a prominent name in the Cubs' history due to his impressive records and contributions to the team during his playing days.
