Winn made a name for himself, playing for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 1998 to 2002. He demonstrated his versatility as an outfielder, played all three positions in the outfield, and was a strong batter, hitting 14 home runs and 26 stolen bases during the 2000 season. Winn earned a reputation as a reliable and consistent performer and was therefore traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2003. During his first year with the Mariners, he recorded an impressive .295 batting average despite playing in 155 games.
