Benge, with his unique sidearm pitching style, was known for his unhittable curveball. His curveball helped him finish 13th in the MVP voting in 1933, leading the league in shutouts with 4, walking only 2.9 batters per nine innings, and striking out 99 batters. Benge made some consistency issues in his career, but his pitching style made him a turning point in baseball pitching history: he was one of the first who aimed exclusively at the outside of the plate, and nobody did it as well as he did.

Aside from being one of the best pitchers of his time, Benge was also known as an outstanding hitter. In his 12 years in the Major Leagues, Benge hit 13 home runs and had a batting average of .238. Upon retiring in 1938, Ray Benge worked as an insurance agent and lived in Jackson, Mississippi, until his death on June 22, 1997, at the age of 95. Read even more about Ray Benge at Wikipedia
