Ray Blades Autograph

Ray Blades was a professional baseball player who was born on December 9, 1896, in Mount Clare, West Virginia. He played as an outfielder for the St. Louis Browns from 1922 until 1929, then for the Chicago White Sox from 1930 until 1932. He ended his baseball career playing for the Toledo Mud Hens in the American Association. Blades started off his career with the St. Louis Browns, where he quickly established himself as a reliable hitter and fielder. In the 1926 season, Blades' performance was exceptional, with him hitting .341 and hitting four home runs, and he was given his first opportunity to participate in the World Series where the Browns lost to the Cardinals in seven games. In the 1928 season, Blades hit .311, setting a new career-best, while also collecting 202 hits, establishing what would still be the Browns' single-season hits record in a season that stood for 40 years. Blades' baseball career spanned over 10 years and included five seasons with an average above .300. He retired from baseball in 1936 with a .298 career average, earning him a reputation as one of the best hitters of the era.

After his baseball career, Ray Blades went on to own and operate a bar and grill in suburban St. Louis. He was also involved in the formation of the Knights of Columbus youth baseball league, which provided an opportunity for local children to play organized baseball. Blades was inducted into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1978 and is recognized as one of the all-time great baseball players from the state.
