Ray Culp Autographs
Ray Culp is a former professional baseball pitcher who played in the major leagues from 1963 to 1973. Born on August 6, 1941, in Elgin, Texas, Culp’s career began when he signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1962. He made his major-league debut with Cleveland in 1963 but was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies the following year. Culp spent most of his career with Philadelphia, where he became known for his strong arm and outstanding control. In 1969, he led the National League with a 2.78 earned run average (ERA) and pitched his only career no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs.
During his eleven-year career, Culp played for six different teams. In addition to the Cleveland Indians and the Philadelphia Phillies, he played for the Chicago Cubs, the Boston Red Sox, the Cincinnati Reds, and the New York Mets. He was primarily a starting pitcher but also served as a relief pitcher on occasion. Culp was a two-time All-Star, earning the honor in 1963 and 1969, and he had a career record of 122-101 with a 3.56 ERA.
After retiring from baseball in 1973, Culp remained involved in the sport as a coach and scout. He was a pitching coach in the Phillies’ organization from 1978 to 1982 and for the Boston Red Sox in 1984. Culp also served as a scout for the Texas Rangers from 1986 to 1994. Culp was inducted into the Elgin High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016 and is remembered as one of the greatest athletes to come out of Elgin, Texas.
