Fosse's most notable achievement in baseball was in the 1970 MLB All-Star game, where he was involved in one of the most famous plays in baseball history. In the bottom of the 12th inning, Fosse was behind the plate and was guarding home plate when Cincinnati Reds' player Pete Rose barreled into him, causing a collision that knocked Fosse unconscious with a separated shoulder. Although Fosse struggled with injuries for the rest of his career, he bounced back to play in 119 games in the 1972 season for the Athletics, helping lead Oakland to a World Series victory.

After his baseball career ended, Fosse became a commentator for the Athletics. He worked for the team for over 30 years, and during his time as a commentator, Fosse was known for his excellent insight and analysis of the game. He was inducted into the Oakland Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000, and his No. 10 jersey was retired by the Athletics in 1997. Fosse has had a successful post-baseball career as a broadcaster, and he is widely remembered as a legendary catcher for his toughness and dedication to the sport.
