In 1962, Ray Herbert had one of his best seasons with the Chicago White Sox, going 20-9 with a remarkable 2.45 earned run average. He was named an All-Star that year and led the American League in innings pitched with 294.2. Herbert also threw six complete game shutouts, which was the highest in the league. He finished fifth in the Cy Young Award voting, and his performance helped the White Sox secure a spot in the World Series that year.

Throughout his career, Ray Herbert was known for his durability and consistency on the mound. He recorded 100 complete games and 16 shutouts in his career, and he had a lifetime record of 104-106 with a 4.03 earned run average. Herbert retired in 1966 and later worked as a scout and pitching instructor for several Major League teams. He passed away on December 28, 2018, in California at the age of 91.
