Ray Washburn Autographs
Ray Washburn was a professional baseball pitcher who played for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1961 to 1969. Washburn was born in Pasco, Washington, in 1938 and began playing baseball in his native state. He excelled as a pitcher and was signed by the Cardinals after graduating from high school in 1958. Washburn played four seasons in the minor leagues before being called up to the major leagues in 1961.
In his first full season with the Cardinals, Washburn won 11 games and had a 2.69 earned run average. He helped lead the team to the National League pennant and a World Series championship in 1964. In that World Series, Washburn pitched a complete game shutout in Game 3, allowing only two hits and striking out eight. He was selected to the All-Star team in 1966 and finished his career with a record of 72 wins and 64 losses.
After retiring from baseball, Washburn worked for many years as a sports broadcaster and executive. He also remained active in his community, serving on the board of the Boys and Girls Club and the local school district. Washburn passed away in 1997, but his legacy as an accomplished pitcher and community leader lives on. His success on the field and off inspired many young players and fans to follow in his footsteps.
