Red Barrett made his MLB debut in 1937 with the Cincinnati Reds, where he spent the first two years of his professional baseball career. During this period, he led the National League (NL) with the lowest earned run average (ERA) and with the most strikeouts. Red then spent the next several years playing for various teams, bringing his unique talent to the pitching mound. Barrett is famous for a remarkable pitching feat during a 1944 game against the Chicago Cubs, where he threw 223 pitches and gave up no walks. This performance earned him the nickname 'the workhorse' as he pitched a total of 56 games that season.

Red Barrett retired from professional baseball in 1949 and settled in California, where he lived out the remainder of his life. He was actively involved with various baseball teams and mentored up and coming baseball players in the area. Over the years, Red Barret was lauded with several accolades, including being voted into the Cincinnati Reds' Hall of Fame.
